Henan University of Science and Technology is in the process of building a new campus south of Luoyang. You can see from this picture of the teaching building complex that there is still alot of open space, but it will be a beautiful campus when it is completed. Though the campus is not yet finished, the school has begun to use the facilities. Lee's freshman students live and attend class here on the new campus, while his senior classes are still at the campus in the city.
The entrance to the teaching buildings is nicely landscaped with a paved courtyard and islands of trees. There are five buildings in the classroom complex, connected by walkways. All of them share this main entrance, though there are smaller doors to the individual buildings as well.
Bringing it to a more personal level, this is building three at the back of the teaching complex. It is where Lee teaches both of his freshman phonetics classes. Once a week, he also holds office hours. This has actually turned into more of an English Corner, where students can sit with him and ask questions or talk about any topic that interests them.
On the day he holds office hours, Lee stays
on campus after class and eats with the students in this cafeteria.
We had to get him a meal card to use here, since you don't pay
cash for the food. He just selects what he wants and the cost
is deducted from the amount we have put on his card. The rice
is in a big sheet pan, and is served by the block, just like a
piece of cake. Lee can get a bowl of 20 jiaozi for 2 yuan ( about
a quarter in American money). There is also a small supermarket
on campus where the students can get snacks, drinks, instant noodles
and other necessities of life.
Basketball is big in China, especially since Yao Ming has made it big in the NBA. These students are relaxing watching some of their classmates play. Besides the basketball courts, the new campus also has tennis courts for the students to use for exercise and recreation.
Every college needs a library and this one is no exception. As this campus is new, and the library on the other campus is still in use, the school is starting a new collection of books here. Lee doesn't use the library much, though, because most of the books are in Chinese. (imagine that!)
One advantage of being on the new campus is the nice new dorms you get to live in. These are boys dorms where some of Lee's students live.
And here you get an inside view of one of the dorm roooms. There are four students to a room, and each one has a bunk, a desk and a closet in a tidy cubicle. Each room also has a private bath. Notice the NBA poster on the closet door. That particular player is Tracy McGrady.
All of the faculty members still live near the campus in the city, so the university provides a bus to transport them back and forth to the new campus. Lee takes advantage of the half hour bus ride to talk to other teachers. They can practice their English and he can practice his Chinese. Here we see Lee returning from a busy but rewarding day at the new campus.
